Halloween: Top 5 Spooky Characters

Continuing on with the spooky themed posts, Halloween is full of fearful characters. From films to stories (both real and fictional) we are naturally afraid of people and the unknown. These are my top five spooky characters from films...

Sanderson Sisters (honourable mention)
The Sanderson Sisters get an honourable mention. Although they aren't scary, they sure are iconic to Halloween. Hocus Pocus (1993) is a great Halloween movie and it is one of my favourite films. It is so quotable and who doesn't love Bette Middler as Winnie Sanderson, accompanied by Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as Sarah and Mary Sanderson. I just love every moment of this film and it's one that I can watch over and over again and never get bored of it. I only noticed recently that in one of the scenes there is a child dressed up as Mrs Potts from Beauty And The Beast (which was released the same year as Hocus Pocus). A great classic and one that I will be watching on Halloween.

Freddy Kreuger
1, 2... Freddy's coming for you...
Now for some of the scarier characters portrayed in films. I think Freddy Kreuger is at the top end of the list, I mean just look at him. I was listening to Heath and Zane's Unfiltered Podcast Ep. 5 and they spoke of Kreuger being based on a combination of people's sleep paralysis descriptions. People who experience sleep paralysis usually witness someone hovering over them and many have described the spectre to be wearing a hat. This being was then transformed into Freddy Kreuger. I personally find him one the the best horror characters out there. I love the eeriness of the Nightmare on Elm Street  franchise. The thought of not being able to sleep for fear of being murdered is one that people would naturally fear. Plus the children's rhyme sung in the films is creepy enough at times too.

Jason Voorhees
Albeit the Friday the 13th films are not my favourite horror series, I wouldn't even say they were good horrors, but Jason Voorhees does make a good villain. He is silent, appears from nowhere and most of all is a masked villain to add more dramatic suspense when the hockey mask comes off. I certainly wouldn't want to bump into him in the middle of the night. More importantly Jason will not die, he always comes back somehow! How can you defeat an undefeatable villain? The films may be bad but he must be a loveable villain to keep reappearing in other films and media ever since.

Leather Face
Now I've never seen the Texas Chainsaw Massacre but knowing that the horror film is based on a true story makes this even more frightening. The story is based on real life Ed Gein who would make keepsakes from bodies he collected by using the skin and fashioning it in to collectibles.
Although I haven't seen the film the story is one that most will know: Leather Face, the chainsaw and the noise of the polaroid camera will send chills down your spine no matter what. This is certainly a film I hope to see this Halloween season.

Pennywise the Clown
With the release of IT in 2017, I read the novel of the same name by Stephen King and was shocked. Pennywise the clown is much freakier and darker than his film counterparts, although Tim Curry (right) and Bill Skarsgard (below) do portray the clown very spectacularly and give their own spin on the clown. The Pennywise character is much deeper and darker in the novel and how IT affects the town of Derry is very sinister. In IT: Chapter Two (2019) they managed to conjure up more of the hatred and villainous moments of the story and makes it more chilling. For example the Paul Bunyan scene was very close to the novel and I loved how they incorporated it into the sequel.
The book is excellent but has very dark themes and very mature scenes that I was shocked to read about, a forewarning if you readers dare to read.
