Never let anyone make you feel ordinary...

Ageing and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.
Summoned to Evelyn's luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s, to her decision to leave show business in the 1980s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn's story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways.

This story is beautiful, fabulous, and enchanting. I literally did not want to put it down. I went in hearing a lot of hype around this novel and I came out completely in love with it and understanding why it is truly deserving of some much hype and praise. Be it so, I have not read a book in a long time that immediately made me want to reread it.

The writing is fantastically descriptive, and as a cinephile and lover of Hollywood past and the film industry, I was swept away with the glamorous retelling of the Golden Age of Hollywood and the tropes women defined throughout. It truly felt like it was an biography and we, the reader, were reliving Hugo's life from her career start. Taylor Jenkins Reid has done her research and this has easily become one of my favourite books of all time. Evelyn Hugo might be a fictional character but the way Reid has written her I almost wish she were a real life actress; I think I read somewhere that Reid had based Hugo off of Elizabeth Taylor and similar starlets.

I really urge everyone to read this book as it's a light historical fiction mixed in with your typical love and mystery; the characters are completely fleshed out making them feel like real people you would hear about and who doesn't love a bit of the highs and lows of Hollywood. I can't wait to read some of Reid's book such as Daisy Jones & The Six and Malibu Rising which apparently makes reference to each other.
