"It's somewhere in the unforeseen when the best, most important moments of our lives seem to happen."

No-nonsense Liis Lindy is an agent of the FBI. Deciding she is married only to her job, she breaks off her engagement and transfers from Chicago to the field office in San Diego. She loves her desk. She is committed to her laptop. She dreams of promotions and shaking hands with the director after cracking an impossible case.

Special Agent in Charge Thomas Maddox is arrogant, unforgiving, and ruthless. He is tasked with putting away some of the world's toughest criminals, and he is one of the best the Bureau has to offer. Though, as many lives as he's saved, there is one that is beyond his reach. Younger brother Travis is faced with prison time for his involvement in a basement fire that killed dozens of college students, and the media want a conviction. Travis's only saviour is his unusual tie to the mob. In a deal that will spare his brother, Thomas has agreed to recruit Travis into the FBI.

Liis is stubborn, defiant, and yet somehow softens Thomas's rough edges, making her the perfect agent to accompany him to the ceremony. Posing as a couple, they must travel to Travis & Abby's beach vow renewal and give him the news, but when the pretending ends, she finds herself wondering if they were pretending at all.
**************
I have to admit this is one of my favourite narratives written by Jamie McGuire. I love reading mystery/thriller stories and so if you like that type of genre, one that draws you in and makes you root for particular characters, and with a little bit of romance mixed in, then you too will enjoy this novel...

So, like Beautiful Oblivion, we get a little inside perspective of the world of the next Maddox Brother, Thomas. Who is very secretive, withholding vital information from his family, like the fact that he works for the FBI! And with this aspect involved we know there's going to be a problem/mystery involved, along with some love, of course. I mean the very first chapter, like most of McGuire's before, had me hooked!

Liis is an amazing kick ass girl in this novel and following her life only gets funnier and more intense. We understand why she's essentially running away from her past only for it to repeat in the present, through her meeting one of the infamous Maddox brothers. She meets Thomas, and like all other Maddox Brothers so far, things get a little crazy. I really liked that it was about Liis wanting to do her job, being an independent woman, settling in well and not necessarily looking for love; although love does become an issue when a Maddox is involved. But I appreciate the fact that she focuses more on her work than anything else - you go girl!

Now let's talk about Thomas. He seems arrogant, distant, and sometimes a little disrespectful to not only Liis but all the others on his work force, which at first I did not like about him. However as the story progresses the readers are made to understand why he behaves that way towards his co-workers. Through this recognition I think I began to find more respect in liking him as a character. One thing that I do love about this book is the mystery behind it; Thomas keeping his work side private in order to keep those he loves safe. Without spoiling too much we get an intel into Travis and Abbie's relationship with the Mafia (whose leader's name has completely slipped my mind).

Although it's hard to have a favourite Maddox brother, it is understandable that Liis is one of my favourite female characters and so through maybe loving her character, I am a fan of Thomas. I honestly wouldn't be able to choose a brother! Thomas could be creeping up to joint first place with Travis. I'm just not sure, but the world of the Maddox brothers is one of my favourite series to read!

Just one last note to make - if any of you have the paperback - does anyone else think that the feel of it is soo nice! It feels almost velvety smooth - or is it just me?
